The One Percent That Makes All the Difference

There is much talk during these days of economic tenuousness about the 1% and the 99%.  I have not the competency to talk about economic issues as I am not an economist.  I have no interest at all to debate the foolishness of politics either.  There is certainly enough to raise the hackles of the most emotional among us, or to make the devil out of the side we are opposed to for whatever reason.  I am not interested in such emotional shouting matches.

I am concerned about a real 1% that is not included in these high tension political confrontations over money; who has it, and who doesn't.  What 1% am I thinking about here then?  Well, I'm thinking about the 1% who has, over the last 10 years, sacrificed more than most Americans, no matter what political stripe they claim.  I'm talking about the 1% who have fought and died in defense of the nation in Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11, our active duty military and veterans.

For many of the 99% these veterans are simply tools of the establishment and, therefore, part of the problem.  For many others, they don't even enter the mind.  Yet it is this 1% whose sacrifices protect the rights of those who hit the streets to protest a government that threatens the perceived entitlements of special interest groups and the rights of others to make money, to enhance the economy, to hire the employable, to create new technologies and businesses.

This 1% is usually either ignored, or reviled.   Though they have fared better than those veterans of the Vietnam era, they are still pretty much either criticized, or out of mind for the majority of the 99% who claim to be the voice of most Americans today.

You see, this argument of the evil of the economic 1%, versus the divine goodness of the 99% is, basically, an illusion at best, or a lie at worst.  In the end though, the real 1% of our population who make up the active duty and veteran military in the last 10 years, have suffered, worked, and died even, without the support, the care, or the concern of most Americans.   But to me this 1% is the most honorable among us.  They represent the true spirit of America.  They are not arrogant, or self-centered.  They are those among us who have been willing to serve and to sacrifice so that the rest of us might have the comfort, the confidence and the liberty to criticize "the powers that be" in our country.

We ought to honor these few among us more purposefully. We ought to give thanks for their sacrifices. We ought to commit ourselves to care for them as they return home wounded in body and mind, or needing the opportunities of education or employment, whether we are one of the economic 1% who have more than they need, or the so-called 99% who live paycheck to paycheck on a monthly basis.   If we did this we might be closer to being on the right track to make a truer, more effective difference in the world.

Help us here at the Veterans Site, then, to meet the needs of those forgotten and lost among us; those who have served, and sacrificed and come back home to find themselves lost and unwanted on our city streets.  Help us feed some of those who have given their all for he rest of us.  Click on the, "Click Here to Donate; It's Free" button on this site.  Pass it on to your friends as well. so that we can truly serve those who have served us.  Thank you
