Mother and daughter beat cancer and continue on fighting the disease

A family member's cancer diagnosis can be devastating. Two breast cancer diagnoses in one family within six weeks of one another would be something else entirely.

A Wisconsin mother and daughter were both diagnosed with breast cancer, according to a reporter from FOX-affiliate WEAU 13 News. Carrie Malicki, a married woman with two young boys was diagnosed with aggressive triple-negative breast cancer.

The source reports that Malicki spent several weeks trying to grasp what was happening to her, before being inspired by her four year old son. "I kind of came out here and said that's it, cancer has my body, it does not have my mind," Malicki told WEAU. "And from that moment forward I was like, I'm a cancer killing machine… It's not gonna take my away my life. My kids deserve their mother."

Six weeks later, Malicki's mother, Peg Traieder, was diagnosed with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Today, less than a year later, both the mother and daughter have beaten the disease. They plan to continue fighting cancer and making Pink Ribbon activities news by participating in a 60-mile walk as part of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in August.

There are approximately 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.
