English setter may face extinction

Pet overpopulation is a huge issue in the U.S. and across the globe, so many people may not be concerned about the extinction of a dog breed. However, the UK Kennel Club recently reported that certain native breeds such as the English setter are at risk of extinction as more people opt for the breeding of "exotic" dogs such as huskies and Chihuahuas, BBC News reports.

Figures show that registrations of English setter puppies have dropped by two thirds in the past 10 years, the news source reports. Caroline Kiski, secretary of the Kennel Club, told the news source that celebrities and popular culture are playing a large role in society, and dogs are "not immune from our fickle tastes."

"The latest victim is the English setter, a wonderful and loyal breed, while the number of Siberian huskies has more than trebled in this country in the last 10 years," she told the publication.

Instead of going for "fashionable breeds," dog lovers may consider adopting to help the issue of pet overpopulation. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that about five out of 10 dogs in shelters are destroyed simply because no one will adopt them.
